It Ain’t Heavy, It’s My Harley

Back in the 90’s I learned a basic truth about motorcycle weight and wind. I was on my second trip to Arizona and was riding a Yamaha TDM that I had rented from Al. I was riding with a friend from Virginia and he was on a K100RT. All the way across Oklahoma I was riding at what seemd a 45 degree angle because of the strong cross winds, but he was having little difficulty on the heavy (by comparison) K100. This past Saturday was a really nice riding day here, except the wind was blowing hard. So using the “heavy is better in wind” theory I naturally chose the XR1200 as my mount. Good decision, during the day the wind grew much stronger, but “my harley” held steadfast to course and proved another axiom “torque is good” as it easily accelerated into the strong headwinds. So, although in many cases weight can be a detriment, it can be a real plus, especially in windy country like ours. Ride what you can, when you can 🙂

Best Courier Bag

I learned something this past year from the guys at the local Honda shop about a handy and free courier bag. I was in their shop and had bought something when I realized that I had no way to take it home on my bike. They said no problem and gave me a standard helemt bag (HJC) that comes with every helmet. They demonstrated how these bags with their cords attached at two points work great for a courier bag. I have been using one ever since on both my M/C and bicycle and it works great. One of the best things is they are so compact you can stuff them in your jacket pocket or under the seat and always have a way of transporting that magazine, quart of oil, etc. when you need to. Give it a try. FYI, I think most shops have these bags lying around and are glad to give them to you or sell one at a very cheap price.

New Helmet – Cafe Racer New Season

I recently purchased a new 3/4 helmet to replace my aging 3/4 HJC. I went with a Z1R, 3/4 Ace Transit in pearl white. I chose it over all the other 3/4’s I looked at because of the better jaw protection. It also has a flip-up full clear shield and visor, both of which can be ordered in various tints and colors. An added bonus has been the increased peripheral vision over my old 3/4. Good fit, designed for American heads. Best vision I’ve had with any helmet, with or without a shield, but not quite as comfortable as an HJC for me. Still a keeper!

The new season of Cafe Racer starts tonight at 9:00 on HDTheater (channel 364 for us on Dish).
