Several small displacement bikes sold in the range of $3,000 – $3,500 at the January Mecum Auction: an RD 350, a CL 350, and several small displacement Italian bikes from Ducati, Parilla, FB Mondial. A 1993 BMW R100 RT sold for $2,500 while a Honda GB500 sold at $14,000. And a 1974 Ducati GT / Sport conversion sold for $41,000! Looks like affordable vintage bikes can be found in unexpected places.

Our DSL connection precluded watching, but thanks for the emailed pics of the R100RT and GB500. I can’t imagine why the RT went so low, you won’t find one around here anywhere near that cheap. However, I’m going to look!!
The local Craig’s List doesn’t have much in the way of interesting vintage motorcycles, but the Spokane and Seattle editions usually contain some tempting items. Would guess that St Pete/Tampa, Daytona, and maybe Sarasota editions would have some interesting machines. Also like browsing Cycle Trader and eBay, but the distances usually precludes inspection visits. It would be fun to attend an auction again; like to think that I learned my lesson about buying an un-restored old motorcycle.
I was surprised how cheap some desirable bikes went for. The BMW R100RT was immaculate and had only 3,000 miles; it sold for $2,500. I don’t think you will find one in that condition advertised for that price on Ebay or in classified ads.
The next Mecum Motorcycle auction is this June. You can register to bid online. With the live feed it’s the next best thing to being there!
